This is a little late in the game, but I decided to throw in a contribution to the whole, “Who Is Rey’s Father in Star Wars: The Force Awakens” debate.

I should start off, however, by saying that I would only label myself a “mediocre” fan of the franchise. I love Star Wars with a passion, yet, my dedication probably pales in comparison to that of many others—those who have read the books and/or studied the various character names, planets, and plot lines throughout the years. I most definitely have not read any book associated with Star Wars, and I certainly haven’t memorized all the names and places.

So, with that being said, and with an effort to stay as true to my own ideas as possible, I refrained from looking up any information about the movie—with the exception of one planet name. Of which, I used Wikipedia. Therefore, if my knowledge of the Force doesn’t quite meet the “nerd approval” standards, then by all means, mock me while you scroll through more Leia/Hermione fan-fiction and slurp on your Mountain Dew in your mother’s basement.

Now, on to the good stuff. I have watched the new Star Wars movie twice now, and each time I have started out believing Rey was Luke Skywalker’s daughter. However, as I watched the movie progress, I started to doubt that theory. Both times, I came to the same conclusion—Rey is not only Han and Leia’s daughter, but she is also Ben Solo’s twin (Kylo Ren).

Here are some highlighted points to help “prove” my theory:

  1. During their first meeting, Rey and Han are so in-tune with each other’s thoughts that they are able to finish one another’s sentences.
  2. When Kylo Ren meets Rey, he states that she is the girl he had “heard so much about.” Now, he could have made that statement based on the knowledge that “a girl” had been seen with the droid (BB-8), but who would know enough about her to report back to Kylo Ren? There was a hidden meaning behind his statement, implying that she could be a possible threat to him and his training.
  3. Without any training of The Force (that we know of), she is able to read Kylo Ren’s mind. Even if she is Luke’s daughter, why does that somehow make her more powerful than Kylo Ren when he has had training his whole life?! It seems more logical that she was able to overpower him due to the fact that they once shared a womb together.
  4. Rey can understand Chewie. When Han, Finn, and Chewie are inside the Star Killer Base, Chewie begins making noises when they stumble upon her. Finn—who had already confirmed earlier in the film that he could not understand Chewie—asked what he said. Rey responds something along the lines of, “He said it was your idea to rescue me.”
  5. When Rey arrives at the planet D’Qar to meet up with the Resistance base, she sees Leia. To my knowledge, there was no immediate dialogue between them. They looked upon each other with a mother-daughter longing in their expressions. One could argue that Rey would have had the same look if she were meeting Leia as her aunt, but their exchange appeared much deeper than that.
  6. Had she been Luke’s daughter, she would have trained alongside with her cousin, Ben Solo. But why would Luke decide to train his nephew, but not his very own daughter?
  7. The prophecy once declared that there would be a “Chosen One” to bring balance to the force. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn believed Anakin Skywalker would be the one to do so. After Anakin was seduced by The Dark Side, that theory was immediately proved to be incorrect once Darth Vader was created. Therefore, when Luke and Leia were born, they were separated. This was done, in large part, so that The Emperor and Vader would not feel either child’s presence and lure the children to The Dark Side as well.
With that being said, it is possible that in The Force Awakens, the prophecy has yet to actually come true, despite what we had already believed by the end of The Return of the Jedi. Think about it—if Luke was supposed to bring balance to The Force, why has The Dark Side risen again?
And for those who might say, “Your theory is flawed. Wouldn’t it make more sense that Luke’s daughter would be the one to carry out her father’s legacy and defeat The Dark Side once again?” Sure. It’s possible. But the theory that Rey is Ben Solo’s twin became even more apparent when Han and Leia were discussing Ben’s downfall. Han comforted Leia by saying, “There was nothing we could have done. There was too much Vader in him.” If my theory of the prophecy is true, then wouldn’t it make more sense that Luke’s daughter was the one to succumb to The Dark Side? It was Luke who let his fear of abandonment teeter on the verge of hate—a trademark from The Dark Side. Leia, however, was never once tempted. Meaning, one of twins carries The Light, while the other carries The Darkness.

And there you go. Could I be wrong? Absolutely. But I did exactly what J.J. Abrams wanted me to do—speculate. Join me, and together we can— Ok, no, I’m not going there.

Anyway, I hope you can still go back to watching your episode of The Big Bang Theory.
